Friends.

We spend our lives searching for love.

We use terms like 'my better half' and 'you complete me' to try and explain the incomparable feeling that comes with falling in love.  The only way for us to explain the ferocity of the feelings is to say that until that person walked into our lives we felt like we were missing a limb, that we were semi-transparent, that we were only half a person.  The love we feel for a partner is extraordinary.

And yet, it is not always our partner or our family members with whom we share our most private thoughts, our secrets, our hopes and our dreams.  They are not the only ones who hold us in their arms, cheer us from the sidelines, and hold our needs and desires at the forefront of their minds.

Sometimes, so very often, it is our friends who hold the fort.

Lately I've been questioning, well, pretty much everything. Most specifically my friendships.  Whether it's healthy, and even safe, to rely on a non-partner for the big stuff.  But then I think of these extraordinary men and women who I'm surrounded by - these magnificent creatures who know when to answer the phone, when to drop everything and arrive on the doorstep, when to say 'no, you're not ok, what's wrong?' and when to just say nothing.

I think of my oldest friend and our ocean-like friendship and that no matter how long it's been and how far out the tide goes, we always end up coming back to each other's shores.  I think of my closest ally who has been my platonic 'other half' since high school who I know I will grow old with like Hilary and C.C from Beaches (or more likely Blanche and Dorothy from The Golden Girls) - hopefully sitting on verandahs and sipping tea or scotch/gin.  I think of her husband - my workshopping partner-in-crime, my fellow fantasist and a constant ear.

I think of my dear college girlfriend and how we take it in turns to be fragile and strong and how freeing it is to be able to revert to the emotional state of an 18-year-old without fear of judgment.  I think of my sidekick/old housemate who always knows exactly the right thing to say whether it's supportive or critical and who has been a silent partner in all aspects of my life for the past half decade. I think of a darling new friend who was 'just there' in my weirdest hour weekend of need, who just makes everything shiny with her directness and mindblowing energy (and hair).

I think of the rush of excitement I get when I reconnect with an old friend or when I meet a new unicorn who blows my mind.  I think of the friends with whom I have regular bare-it-all dinners, my walking buddies and my dancing buddy. I think of my friends with whom I talk politics and internet-crushes and those who I debate over booze-laden dinner tables.  I think of the friends who I can crawl into bed next to on Sunday morning with cups of tea and the paper and those who I jump in a car with for spontaneous adventures.

I believe that our friendships can complete us and fulfil us as much as a romantic relationship, just in very different ways.  I love that some of my gang know and love each other and some have never heard of nor met each other.

Mostly I just think about how very lucky I am, even in the darkest hours, due to a lovely ring of special ones who make each moment just that little bit more magical.

Northern Weddings.

I've just returned home to (southern) Melbourne after a few days waaaay up north in Port Douglas for the wedding of two very special people.

It was one of the most relaxed weddings I have ever attended. There were no zilla suffixes anywhere to be seen. Just lots of good vibes, pinging all over the place.

And why would there be any drama given this amazing setting?

To L&G, who currently call Africa home: it was such a treat to have you back for the big day, we'll keep the shores warm and the beer cold for your future (and, hopefully, more permanent) homecoming.

A day for Hayley.

I spent *a lot* of the day thinking of a dear, dear friend: the stunning, statuesque Hayley who is celebrating her 30th birthday today, too many miles north of where I am. This is her the day after my Colours of the Wind party, looking gorgeous, as only she can post-wild-party.

Love, and much more, to come when we're next together Ms. R. xoxo,

Glorious Sundays.

Today was an absolutely glorious day. Full of beautiful spring sunshine, the constant calls of birds flitting about the trees (including kookaburras, thrushes, bowerbirds). It was lovely.

We hosted a lunch party in the garden; full of lovely fresh food, delicious beverages and giggle-filled conversation.

Right now I'm eating gluten-free mandarin cake and smiling quietly.

I hope your day was filled with laughter and love, whether you're enjoying fall or spring.

Joy.

Happy Saturday you frolickers.

Today I feel like a five-year-old on Christmas Eve.  My little heart is pounding, I know that tonight my eyelids will refuse to stay shut and I'll be counting down the hours.

The MMs arrive home tomorrow.  It will be the first time in about 5 years that we will be living in the same city.  Oh the joy.  The list of things to visit and do is growing by the second.

Break out the Vegie Bar cheesecake!

Have yourself a Graceful weekend.

My loves, spring is in the air.

It's so, so glorious, I can smell so much promise of an amazing summer.

The cherry blossoms are blooming everywhere, bringing so much happiness.

So, this weekend I'm going to channel Grace. Lightness, joy, laughter and quiet excitement.

I'm going for a long early-morning walk with my darling friend, Sam, tomorrow morning.

Then to a beautiful-sounding cafe called Robyn's Nest in Elwood in the afternoon...

Before seeing one of my most-loved people, Jess, in the evening at a birthday party.

I speak to Jess on average, oh, four times per day. She brings daily joy to my life; and that of many others. And I haven't seen her for nearly 6 months, a long time sans face time with a dear one.

Hence the smiles. And the joy. And Grace.

Have a glorious time yourself. Pick some blossoms. Make a tea cake. And call a friend who you cherish but don't call enough.

Friendship.

Lately I've been thinking quite a lot about friendship.

I love to spend a lot of time in my own space but sometimes it is lovely to share moments with others, isn't it?

I've been spending a lot of time lately with some treasured friends. New friends, old friends, semi-friends, ex-friends, much loved friends.

Somehow, I'm very lucky that most of my favourite people seem to have gravitated back to the same little sphere that I am currently inhabiting.

It's joyful.

I hope you also have wonderful friends. Hold them close next time you hug.
